Virgil Simpson (formerly known as just Virgil) was a runaway slave of Colonel Burns who was found by Eliza Simpson and went with the young girl to safety. He was allowed to stay in Hiram Simpson's house, but after Colonel Burns found out that Virgil had escaped, he tempted Hiram with the promise of new shoes, and thus, the "southern gentleman" betrayed Virgil to Burns, though Mabel Simpson managed to save the slave by threatening to shoot both Burns and Hiram. She escaped with Virgil, leaving Eliza behind. They went to Canada, where Virgil proposed to Mabel, and they got married shortly after and had a son named Abraham Simpson I, the direct ancestor of the Simpson family.
