In the early morning of July 27, 2013, aspiring fashion designer Perrie Caldwell is found unresponsive in the boiler room of Wyatt University and pronounced dead at the scene, with the case of death being ruled a murder. Police detectives Andrea Wilson and Thomas Canterbury are assigned to the case, with supervision from Captain Rhea Garth. The primary suspect is Caldwell's fiancé Dwight Everett, with whom Caldwell had had recent altercations. He is arrested the following morning and questioned by Wilson and Canterbury, who notice a series of inconsistencies in his statements. Concurrently, reporter Jeremy Finch starts an investigation surrounding the case on his own with the aim of gathering information to write an article about it; and Caldwell's mother, Amanda, begins a campaign to have her daughter's murderer be sentenced to death for their crimes.
