- “My special little guy”
- ―Marge sometimes to Bart.
Marjorie "Marge" Simpson (née Bouvier; born March 19, 1950) is the dedicated and often exasperated mother of the Simpson family. Known for her tall blue beehive hair and patient demeanor, she serves as the family’s moral compass, attempting to keep order despite Homer’s antics and the chaos surrounding her children. Although usually a homemaker, Marge has tried her hand at various careers, ranging from police officer to real estate agent to baker.
Early Life and Meeting Homer
Marge was born in Capital City and raised by her parents, Clancy and Jacqueline Bouvier. She has two older twin sisters, Patty and Selma, who despise her husband Homer, and an older brother, Edward, who's a scientist/inventor.
Marge first met Homer as a child at Camp Land-A-Man when they were ten years old, though neither recognized the other later on. They reconnected in high school, where Homer tricked Marge into going on a study date with him. She ended up attending prom with Artie Ziff but regretted it, ultimately confessing to Homer that she wished she’d gone with him. This moment sparked the beginning of their long-term relationship.
During college, Marge briefly dated Professor Stefane August but ultimately returned to Homer, realizing she was still in love with him. The couple eventually moved in together and struggled to build a life, with Homer working various jobs to support them.
The Generate Girls
When Marge was in college, she met Nora, Georgette and Roxann in Dorm 16. They love to play pranks on people and the dean; Marge says that she still keeps in touch with them after they stepped down from pranking others as she tells Bart about his friendship bracelet.
Marriage and Family Life
Marge and Homer married at a small wedding chapel near the state line. By their honeymoon, Marge was already pregnant with their first child, Flint. They went on to have seven more children: Tessa, Jassele, Dana, Bart, Lizzy, Lisa and Maggie.
Despite her frustrations with Homer’s frequent irresponsibility, Marge remains devoted to her family. She takes care of the house, supports her children’s interests, and tries to keep peace between them and Homer. She also serves as the family’s moral anchor, insisting they attend church even when Homer refuses.
Personality and Traits
Marge is kind-hearted, responsible, and patient, but she can be a hypocrite at times. While she frequently disapproves of Homer’s behavior, she occasionally indulges in questionable activities herself, such as hoarding a handgun she initially disapproved of or using violent methods to protest a violent video game.
She tends to find joy in simple pleasures and considers even the most ordinary things exotic, like oregano or buttered noodles. However, her controlling nature sometimes causes friction, especially when she tries to limit activities that others enjoy just because they don’t suit her tastes.
Marge’s love for her family is her most defining trait, though her efforts are often unappreciated. Despite this, she remains loyal and supportive even when everyone else seems indifferent.
Wild Escapades and Careers
Marge’s life is not without its adventures. She has taken on numerous jobs and roles over the years, including:
- Police Officer
- Real Estate Agent
- Pretzel Cart Owner
- Sculptor
- Teacher at Springfield Elementary
- Author
- Baker for an Erotic Bakery
- Gym Creator (Shapes)
- Waitress, Maid, Janitor
- TV Anchorwoman and Crime Scene Investigator
- Bodybuilder and Car Mechanic
Her jobs rarely last long, and she usually returns to her role as a homemaker.
Criminal Record and Controversies
Despite her generally good nature, Marge has occasionally found herself on the wrong side of the law:
- Shoplifting (Marge in Chains)
- Child Negligence (Orange is the New Yellow)
- Drug Abuse (Steroid Overdose in The Strong Arms of the Ma)
- Manslaughter (Accidentally triggering Hans Moleman's airbag in The Debarted)
- Growing Marijuana (The Kids Are All Fight)
Marge’s occasional hypocrisy and judgmental nature have also caused trouble for her family, especially when she overreacts to activities she disapproves of.
Physical Appearance
Marge is famous for her towering blue beehive hair, which she maintains using various products, including hairspray, copper wire, and even concrete. Though her hair is naturally gray, she began dyeing it blue at 17.
Despite her plainness compared to other characters, Marge is often considered beautiful, and her attractiveness has been noted by several Springfield residents.
Political Views
Marge generally aligns with mainstream political views, though she has shown support for both parties over the years. She ran for the Republican Party during a mayoral election but has also supported progressive candidates.
Skills and Abilities
Marge Simpson has displayed numerous skills and talents throughout her life, often surprising others with her abilities.
Artistic Talent (Painting & Sculpture)
Marge is an exceptional painter. As a teenager, she developed a crush on Ringo Starr and painted countless portraits of him, one of which eventually won her praise from Mr. Burns. Her paintings have been featured in the Springfield Art Museum, and she has demonstrated talent in sculpture as well, creating life-sized figures of various Springfield residents out of Popsicle sticks.
Cooking
Marge is an excellent cook, preparing most of the family’s meals. She once started a pretzel business that gained popularity thanks to some unintentional help from the mob. Her cooking skills have been refined over the years, and she often prepares elaborate and delicious meals for her family.
Physical Strength
Marge occasionally displays remarkable strength. She has effortlessly lifted and thrown Homer out of their bedroom, swung him around during a dance contest, and even hurled a motorcycle up a flight of stairs. Her strength once earned her a second-place trophy at the Iron Maiden Fitness Pageant.
Leadership (As Mayor)
Marge briefly served as the Mayor of Springfield in The Old Blue Mayor She Ain't What She Used to Be. After winning the election over Mayor Quimby, she became a popular leader despite a rough first year. Her quick response to the Great Molasses Flood earned her widespread praise and a landslide re-election. However, a series of political scandals eventually led to her removal from office. Despite this, her achievements were significant enough to merit the construction of the Marge Mayoral Museum.
Relationships
Homer Simpson (Husband)
Marge's relationship with Homer is complicated but deeply loving. Despite Homer's frequent irresponsibility and childlike behavior, Marge remains committed to their marriage. They’ve faced countless challenges, including infidelity scares and financial hardship, yet they always find their way back to each other.
Tessa Simpson (Older Daughter)
Marge has a mostly positive relationship with Tessa, though their differences sometimes cause friction. Marge disapproves of Tessa’s house parties, especially after a traumatic experience at Sasha’s house party during Marge’s youth. She’s also uneasy about Tessa’s relationship with Montaigne, but tries to be supportive.
Bart Simpson (Son)
Marge has a complicated relationship with Bart, her “special little guy.” While she’s often disappointed by his mischievous behavior, her love for him never wavers. She frequently tries to guide him in a positive direction, often making him do community service to curb his bad habits. Despite his antics, she recognizes Bart’s good heart.
Lizzy Simpson (Second Older Daughter)
Marge and Lizzy share a close relationship, with Lizzy looking up to Marge for guidance. Marge tries to nurture Lizzy’s interest in fashion and occasionally helps her prepare to look good for the boys she likes. Although Marge initially disapproved of Lizzy’s involvement with the junior mafia, her love for her daughter remains strong.
Lisa Simpson (Second Younger Daughter)
Marge and Lisa generally get along well. Marge often tries to understand Lisa’s intellectual and moral viewpoints, though she sometimes struggles to fully grasp them. Despite their occasional disagreements, Marge is very supportive of Lisa’s interests and ambitions.
Maggie Simpson (Youngest Daughter)
Marge shares a gentle and affectionate bond with Maggie. They often engage in simple activities like housework and shopping together, and Maggie occasionally helps her mother around the house. Their relationship is mostly peaceful and loving.
Moe Szyslak (Friend)
Moe has an unrequited crush on Marge, though she is mostly oblivious to his advances. While Marge treats Moe kindly, she shows no romantic interest in him.
Nelson Muntz (Friend of Bart)
Though Marge initially disapproved of Bart’s friendship with Nelson, she eventually formed a motherly bond with him in Sleeping with the Enemy. While the relationship was short-lived, Marge continues to be friendly toward Nelson.
Ned Flanders (Close Friend/Neighbor)
Ned and Marge share a friendly relationship, although there have been hints of romantic tension. In The Devil Wears Nada, Marge was briefly attracted to Ned after seeing him shirtless. In one future timeline, Marge and Ned end up marrying after Homer’s death.
Political Views
Marge’s political views are inconsistent. While she once ran for the Republican Party during the mayoral elections, her moral values often align more closely with progressive causes. She has shown support for liberal candidates like Mary Bailey and expressed sadness over Lyndon B. Johnson’s death. Though she has occasionally dabbled in politics, Marge tends to focus more on maintaining her family’s well-being than promoting political agendas.

Non-Canon Appearances
Template:Noncanon
In "How the Test Was Won", after a series of dangerous events, Homer imagines Marge making out with Lindsey Naegle (which is seen in the non-canon template above).
Future
At age 45, in "Future-Drama" Marge leaves Homer after he blew the family savings on an underwater home. She then dates Krusty the Clown. Homer tries to win Marge's love back by beating him up and is beaten up himself. Marge then gets back together with Homer. [1]
"Lisa's Wedding" and "Holidays of Future Passed" depict Marge still happily married to Homer.
In "Bart to the Future", Marge and Homer search for Lincoln gold in the White House where Lisa works as the president of the United States.
In "Days of Future Future", which is a sequel to "Holidays of Future Passed", over the course of thirty years Homer keeps dying and being cloned by Frink back to life, but he eventually cannot be cloned anymore and is now a disembodied head on a screen. Marge kicks Homer out to live with Bart. Later in the episode when Bart and Lisa are at Moe's lamenting about their marriages, Marge is revealed to be there too, and says she married their father because when you make a decision, you stick with it. Her own advice convinces her to go back to Homer. At the end of the episode their relationship is amended, and Homer is now in a sophisticated, C-3PO-esque robot body.
At the end of "Flanders' Ladder", Marge remarries Ned at some point after Homer's death and dies peacefully at the age of 84.
In "The Old Blue Mayor She Ain't What She Used to Be", in the year 2022 Marge and Homer walk through a hall dedicated to her political career. Marge suggests skipping one exhibit that they come near, but Homer points out they have to pass through it to get to the building's cafeteria. They then walk through the exhibit that revealed that she was impeached and Quimby was reinstated as the Mayor of Springfield.

Behind the Laughter
Marge is voiced by Julie Kavner, who became famous for her role on the TV series Rhoda.
As with many Simpsons characters, Marge's age, which is confirmed to be the same as Homer's in the season 17 episode "Regarding Margie" and again in the season 25 episode "The Winter of His Content", changes to serve the story. She celebrates her 34th birthday in season 1's "Life on the Fast Lane". In season 10's "The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace", Marge gives Homer's age as 39, and by season 19's "That '90s Show", they are both "almost 40".
Creation
Matt Groening first conceived the Simpson family in the lobby of James L. Brooks's office. He had been called in to pitch a series of animated shorts and had intended to present his "Life in Hell" series. When he realized that animating "Life in Hell" would require him to rescind publication rights for his life's work, Groening planned to go in another direction. He sketched out his version of a dysfunctional family and named the characters after various members of his own family, with Marge being the name of his mother. Marge then made her debut with the rest of the Simpsons clan on April 19, 1987, in the Tracey Ullman short "Good Night".[2]
In The Simpsons Season Four DVD commentary, Matt Groening states that the original idea behind Marge's hair was to conceal large rabbit ears. The gag was intended to be revealed in the final episode of the series but was scrapped early on due to inconsistencies. [3] It did, however, make it in The Simpsons Arcade Game.
Reception
Julie Kavner received a Primetime Emmy Award in 1992 for voicing Marge in the episode "I Married Marge".[4] In 2004, Kavner and Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer) won a Young Artist Award for "Most Popular Mom and Dad in a TV Series".[5] For her performance in The Simpsons Movie, Kavner received a nomination for "Best Voice Acting in an Animated Feature" at the 2007 Annie Awards, but lost to Ian Holm in Ratatouille.[6][7] Kavner's emotional performance in the movie got positive reviews and one critic said she "gave what must be the most heartfelt performance ever".[8]
Cultural Influence
Merchandising
Marge is featured in much Simpsons-related merchandise, including T-shirts, baseball caps, stickers, cardboard stand-ups, refrigerator magnets, key rings, buttons, dolls, posters, and figurines. She has appeared in all of The Simpsons video games, including The Simpsons Game. Besides the television series, Marge regularly appears in issues of Simpsons Comics. Marge also plays a role in The Simpsons Ride, at Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood.
Playboy Shoot
In October 2009, it was announced that Marge would be featured on the front cover of the November issue of Playboy. The edition was first published on October 16, 2009. The cover and a three-page picture spread, as well as a story inside entitled "The Devil in Marge Simpson", is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons but is also part of a plan to appeal to younger readers. Chief executive of Playboy Enterprises, Scott Flanders, has said that the cover and centerfold were "somewhat tongue-in-cheek".
Trivia
- Despite having French ancestry, Marge's voice sounds very Yiddish and bares resemblance to that of her voice Julie Kavner. In fact, Kavner was acknowledged to have provided merely be a squeaky, gravelly version of her own voice when playing Marge.https://www.upi.com/Archives/1992/03/04/The-weird-thing-about-actress-Julie-Kavner-is-her/7765699685200/
- Time Magazine noted in 2007 how Marge's decent personality resembles that of All in The Family matriarch Edith Bunker.http://content.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1738178_1737704_1737693,00.html
- In "Homer's Paternity Coot", Marge states that if she'd been born three months earlier her birthstone would be Emerald (the birthstone of May), putting her birthday in August.
- In "Marge Gamer", Marge originally said she was born on October 1, the same birthday as Randy Quaid. Although in "Homer's Paternity Coot", Marge stated was born sometime in February. Marge says in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore" that her birthday is in May. However, in "Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart", Lisa showed a calendar saying her birthday was on March 19.
- Including her hair, Marge is 8'6". Without her hair, Marge would technically be about 6'4'', 6'5'' with her usual heels.[9] However, being about half a head shorter than Homer (6'0"), her real height would be around 5'7".
- Marge's hair is two feet and one inch long.
- Marge has hazel-colored eyes.
- Bouvier is the maiden name of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
- In the episode "Boy Meets Curl ", Marge states that she is left-handed, and that she has been using her right hand for years because she didn't want to seem unusual, and since she is able to use both her right and left hand so well, she is now ambidextrous (both left and right-handed). She is also the only known ambidextrous character.
- Her favorite singer is Tom Jones.
- Her shoe size is 13AA.
- Marge's worst fear is never being a grandmother, but Homer believes it to be Lisa getting a beard of bees.
- As shown in "Kill Gil: Vols. 1 & 2", Marge has trouble saying "no". As shown when she was about 7, Patty and Selma told Marge to hide their cigarettes in her dollhouse. She refused and got stuffed into the dollhouse.
- She can speak fluent French.
Marge wearing her glasses.
- Marge also needs to wear glasses but doesn't want to wear them as she thinks they make her look dowdy.[10]
- Marge's middle name is Jacqueline, another nod to Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
- Marge's number one concern is being hit in the eye with the rubber band around her morning newspaper when she takes it off.
- In "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Springfield", it is mentioned that her hair is around eighteen inches long.
- In "$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)", it is revealed that Marge has a gambling addiction. In the Family Guy episode "The Son Also Draws", Lois Griffin also ends up developing a slight gambling addiction.
- Another thing she shares with Lois Griffin is that she and Lois are both shoplifters.
Bunny ears?
- According to Matt Groening, Marge's hairstyle was actually intended to hide rabbit ears to be revealed in the last season 1 episode, but in the end, it was chosen that the rabbit ears were totally ridiculous, even for The Simpsons.[11] However, it's still briefly seen in The Simpsons Arcade Game.
- The Simpsons Movie is the only time Marge's lingerie was shown.
- She has aviophobia (fear of flying) and probably also acrophobia (fear of heights) as shown in "Fear of Flying". However, as shown by every other occurrence of her and her family traveling by plane, it's possible Marge overcomes these fears and can, by extension, "control" them.
- It is also revealed that Marge has OCD in "Lisa Gets the Blues".
- She is sometimes seen eavesdropping on other people. Rod, Todd, and Lisa all complained about her eavesdropping on their prayers.
- She is referred to as Midge by Moe Szyslak.
- She once had her hair done like Sideshow Mel's hair.
- Marge breastfed Lisa for nine months as mentioned in "The Day the Earth Stood Cool". Lisa is the only child Marge has breastfed.
- There is a goof in multiple episodes where for one scene, Marge's pearls are white, like Lisa's, instead of red.
- It has been shown multiple times that Marge is incapable of recognizing sarcasm and jokes and believes them to be true. An example of this would be in "E. Pluribus Wiggum", when she mentions Bart making a joke about Homer's weight disrupting satellites, but she was still convinced it was possible, despite Homer telling her it was a joke. An example of her not recognizing sarcasm would be in The President Wore Pearls when Marge believed Bart was applauding and supporting Lisa but was corrected by Bart who told Marge he was using sarcasm, but Marge then became confused.
- There is a running joke involving Marge being subject of attraction from Milhouse and other children such as Nelson, causing Bart to become aggressive as shown in "Simpson Tide" and in "The Blue and the Gray".
- Marge was the first character to speak in the entire series.
- Along with Lisa, Marge appeared in every episode until "Carl Carlson Rides Again."
- In "Married to the Blob", Marge tells Comic Book Guy she married Homer to get back at her mother, though that is part of the Treehouse of Horror series, so it is non-canon.
- She always says the word "snuggle"/"snuggling" instead of the word "sex". She never uses the word "sex", and if she has to, she will only spell it out. The only times she has said the word is when Patty and Selma were emailing Artie Ziff and she said: "You can't say sex on the Internet". She also said it in the episode about Valentine's Day and the Team Homer episode.
- In the season 1 box-set's audio-commentary for "Homer's Odyssey", Jay Kogen said that when he was writing the script from the episode with Wallace Wolodarsky they called Marge Juliet, based on Romeo and Juliet because Matt Groening didn't tell them that her name is Marge.
- Marge, like many other mothers in the show, disapproves of The Itchy & Scratchy Show, due to it being way too violent and gory.
- It is implied that Marge might not confirmed a bisexual, as she realized she enjoyed making out with Lady Gaga. Afterwards, Marge slept with Homer to assure herself of her sexuality.
- Marge has only smoked one pack of cigarettes.
- In "Homer to the Max", it's revealed that Marge has a tattoo of Homer's name on a "private part" of her body (most likely around the chest, as in some states, tattoos on and below the butt are illegal).
- She craved pancake mix and heavy metal music (especially by Kiss) during her pregnancies.
- In "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", Marge stated that she took the Simpson D.N.A. when she married Homer.
- The name Marjorie is a French female given name meaning Pearls.
- Marge speaks Portuguese (Brasilia) fluently.
- Because Marge suffered anaphylaxis, or extreme allergic reaction to seafood, when she visited The Frying Dutchman just so Homer can eat as much as he pleased in The Frying Dutchman, she just had a few Tic-Tac's in her purse, then slept until Homer was kicked out of the place because he almost cleaned out of the restaurant's supplies.
