Hopalong Van Houten is the Van Houten family's Western ancestor and the best friend of Buck Simpson, the great-great-granduncle of Bart Simpson. Hopalong looks eerily similar to his descendant, Milhouse, but he wears a blue vest and black bolo tie. He is also bullied by Biffwald Muntz, the Western ancestor of Nelson Muntz.

Hopalong and Buck are actually half-cousins through Mabel Simpson, who is Hopalong's maternal grandmother and Buck's paternal grandmother. However, Hiram Simpson is Hopalong's maternal grandfather while Virgil Simpson is Buck's paternal grandfather. The two never seem to realize they're related, though.
