Breathe Me is a 2004 single by Australian singer Sia, covered in 2020 by Springfield singer Fay Middlestone, released as a single from her posthumous second studio album Essentially Fay.

Background[]

Middlestone was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2016, just after filming her final scenes in Hopeful. Determined to leave something behind, Middlestone began work on a second album with her children Rapsta Chik and Zachary Phylson involved in the writing process. She ordered her family and friends to not let her diagnosis become public. Middlestone originally planned to release the album before she passed away, but when she took a turn for the worst, she asked Chik to release the album after her death and donate all proceeds from the album and it's singles to charity. Fay passed away on September 20, 2020. Essentially Fay was released on September 25, 2020, alongside lyric videos for "I'm Still Breathing" and "Breathe Me".

Composition[]

"Breathe Me" is an easy listening and indie pop song written by Sia Furler and Dan Carey, Middlestone's cover is produced by her son Zachary Phylson. Middlestone chose to cover the song for the album as it's one of her favourite songs of all time, and she was a big fan of Sia.

Critical Reception[]

Critics reviewed Middlestone's cover of the song positively, Adrianna Morgan liking that Middlestone kept her vocals soft and delicate and not as powerful as usual so as to keep faith with Sia's interpretation of the song.
